- Global hunger falls in 2025, but world remains off track for zero hunger goal
- The world remains off track to meet the 2030 Zero Hunger goal.
- It is estimated that 7.8 per cent of the world’s population faced hunger in 2025.
- Conflict, extreme weather, aid cuts and the rising cost of nutritious food could reverse recent gains.
- For the first time since such data has been tracked, Africa has overtaken Asia as the region with the largest number of hungry people.
- Most severe hunger crises occur in South Sudan, Burundi, Somalia, the Central African Republic, and Chad.
- Much of the unaffordability in Africa was linked to nutrient-rich animal-source foods, including milk, eggs and meat.
- State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 report was released jointly by five specialised agencies of the United Nations: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
