Unmanned drones to keep watch over forests

Tamilnadu is using unmanned drones in surveillance of tiger reserves. A total of 13 tiger reserves have been identified across the country where drones will be used for surveillance. Tamilnadu has 4 tiger reserves namely Sathyamangalam, Mudumalai Anamalai, and Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.
Wildlife Institute of India will provide training for foot soldiers of forest department on use of these unmanned aerial surveillance systems.
Since, Sathyamangalam is the largest tiger reserve in Tamilnadu drones were already used on a trial basis.
In India, unmanned drones were used in Panna Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh for the first time to control wildlife crimes and protect forest resources.
Unmanned aerial surveillance systems are being used to control wildlife protection and crime prevention in jungles of Sumatra , Borneo , Nepal , China, Scotland, Namibia and many other western countries.
The unmanned aircraft would collect and transmit visual data on animal movements, poaching activities and instances of forest fire from inaccessible forest terrains on a real-time basis. It will help in checking smuggling of redwood and sandalwood, most valuable resources of Tamilnadu forests. The drones can be used for surveillance, population monitoring of wild animals, crisis management and forest mapping.
