  • The day was first celebrated in 1988 as the world’s first global health day.
  • The aim is to promote prevention, testing, treatment, and to support people living with HIV.
  • The theme for 2025 is Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response.
  • In 2024, about 40.8 million people were living with HIV and 1.3 million acquired HIV.
