- Indian-American Soil Scientist Dr. Rattan Lal has won the 2020 World Food Prize given by the World Food Prize Foundation.
- It is given to him for mainstreaming and developing a soil centric approach to increase food production that conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change.
- The World Food Prize was created in 1986 with sponsorship by General Foods Corporation.
- The Prize is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field of agriculture.
- The Prize is presented each October on UN World Food Day (October 16).
- The World Food Prize Foundation is currently run by Barbara Stinson.
- It was conceived by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norman Borlaug, the Father of Green Revolution.
- The first winner of this prize was MS Swaminathan in 1987, the Father of Indian Green Revolution.
