- It is celebrated to highlight the negative impact of human activities.
- The Oceans Institute of Canada brought the idea of celebrating global ocean day at the Earth Summit of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992.
- After 16 years, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution in 2008 to designate this day.
- The theme for this year is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean."
