- This day marks the start of the Adelie penguins' northern migration.
- Adelie penguins are one of the 17–20 species of penguins recognized globally.
- In the winter, they move north for better access to food, and in the summer, they return to Antarctica's coastal beaches to nest.
- Among the around 17 recognised species, up to 10 are classified as endangered by IUCN with three considered Near threatened.
