  • World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on the 3rd of May.
  • The theme of this year is “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”.
  • The theme discusses
    • current challenges faced by media in elections
    • media’s potential in supporting peace and reconciliation processes.
  • World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993 following recommendations of UNESCO.
  • 3 May is the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek
  • This anniversary is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.
  • Windhoek Declaration is a statement of press freedom principles declared by African newspaper journalists in 1991.
Facts
  • According to a report by the International Federation of Journalists, 95 journalists have been killed in 2018 for defending freedom the press.
  • 18 journalists have been killed since January 2019.
  • India ranks 140th out of 180 countries in press freedom ranking released by Reporters sans frontiers.
