- Saikhom Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian after twenty two years to win a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA.
- This was after she lifted a new world record of 194 kg in women’s 48kg category.
- Overall she became only the second Indian after Karnam Malleswari to win the gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships.
- In 1994 and 1995 Karnam Malleswari won the gold medal at world weightlifting championship.
