The Communist Party of India (CPI) completed 100 years on 26 December 2025.
The CPI was first formed in 1920 at Tashkent by Indian revolutionaries including M.N. Roy, Mohammad Ali, M.P.T. Acharya, and Mohammad Shafiq.
It was formally established in India at the Kanpur Communist Conference in December 1925.
Singaravelu Chettiar was the first President of the Communist Party of India.
The slogan “Inquilab Zindabad” was coined by Maulana Hasrat Mohani and was raised at the Kanpur Conference.
The CPI helped build organisations such as the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the All-India Kisan Sabha (AIKS).
It also supported organisations like the All-India Students’ Federation (AISF), Progressive Writers’ Association (PWA), and Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
The CPI led major movements such as the Telangana armed struggle, the Tebhaga movement, and the Punnapra–Vayalar struggle.
The party supported the demand for complete independence from British rule.
The CPI strongly advocated the formation of a Constituent Assembly for free India.
M.N. Roy proposed a constitution in 1934.
The CPI raised issues of land redistribution, labour rights, minimum wages, and social security.
The party also supported federalism and linguistic and cultural diversity in India.
