8th Central Pay Commission

  • Union Cabinet approves terms of reference for the 8th Central Pay Commission.
  • Former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai will chair this Commission.
  • It also has, IIM Bangalore Professor Pulak Ghosh as Member (Part-Time).
  • UNION Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary Pankaj Jain has been named as the member-secretary.
  • It was constituted to examine and recommend changes in salaries and benefits of central government employees.
  • The Commission was announced in January 2025 and will submit recommendations within 18 months of its constitution.
  • The 8th CPC will consider economic conditions, fiscal prudence, pension liabilities, state finances, and current employee emoluments while making recommendations.
  • The 8th Central Pay Commission recommendations would normally be expected from 01.01.2026
  • The 7th Pay Commission was also rolled out in July 2016, but employees were paid arrears for a six-month period starting January 2016.
