- The award was founded in 1980 by Swedish-German philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull.
- The annual Right Livelihood Award “honours efforts” which the founder of the prize felt were being “ignored by the Nobel prizes”.
- The four winners will each receive 1 million kronor ($103,000).
