Archaeological Findings in Thanjavur

A 13th-century Pandya copper coin and an ancient Pallava-era Sivalingam have been found near Budalur, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.
The 3.30 g copper coin belongs to Jatavarman Sundara Pandiyan I (1250–1284 CE) and was identified as an issue from his first regnal year, 1251 CE.
The coin shows a human figure on the obverse and a vertically placed fish between two lamps on the reverse, with the Tamil legend “Ellanthalaiyanan”.
A large Sivalingam, about 3 feet in height, length and width, was also found in a nearby grove and is believed to belong to the Pallava period.
The finds were reported from the Sengamedu mound between Ilangadu and Niyamam villages, an area historically ruled by Cholas, Pallavas, Mutharaiyars, Pandyas, Nayaks and Marathas.
