Blackbuck population

  • The blackbuck was declared locally extinct in Chhattisgarh in 2017 due to poaching and habitat loss.
  • A five-year reintroduction plan was launched by the Chhattisgarh State Wildlife Board in 2021.
  • 77 blackbucks were translocated from New Delhi and Bilaspur to Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • By 2025, the population in the sanctuary increased to 190, with 100 released into the wild and 90 still in enclosures.
  • Blackbucks are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
