Coffee Husk Innovation - CLRI

CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR-CLRI), Chennai, has developed a leather-like material from coffee husk waste.
India produces about 3.5 lakh tonnes of coffee annually, generating around 1 lakh tonnes of coffee husk waste.
The material is made by converting coffee husk into a matrix using plant-derived materials, followed by colouring, coating and embossing.
The technology follows a zero-liquid and zero-solid-waste discharge concept and can be used to make bags, wallets, footwear and notebook covers.
It is intended as an alternative to petroleum-based synthetic materials such as Polyurethane (PU) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), not as a replacement for real leather.
