  • The government has proposed a 10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS) to increase domestic container production and reduce import dependence.
  • The scheme will run for five years and aims to raise India’s annual container production capacity to about 7.5 lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).
  • It will support new factories, expansion of existing units, testing infrastructure, skill development and capacity building.
  • India currently imports nearly 2 million empty containers annually for domestic needs and repositioning.
  • The scheme is expected to create about 3,000 direct and 50,000 indirect jobs in container manufacturing and related industries.
