The day offers tribute to the victims of chemical warfare, as well as affirms the commitment of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to eliminate the threat of chemical weapons.
It further aims to promote the goals of peace, security, and multilateralism.
United Nations (UN) officially recognized the day and has been celebrated since 2005.
Adopted in 1993, the Chemical Weapons Convention entered into force on 29 April 1997.
