- The Ministry of Earth Sciences created the Earth System Sciences Council to merge the following five institutes:
- Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM - Pune)
- National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS - Thiruvananthapuram)
- National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT - Chennai)
- National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR - Goa) and
- Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS - Hyderabad).
- The first General Body meeting reviewed how all these institutes will work together in a single governance system.
- The merger aims to improve efficiency and reduce administrative overlap across the Earth science institutes.
- Each institute will keep its identity while following the unified rules of the new Council.
- The Council is studying a plan to publish one combined annual report for all institutes.
