- The Ladakh State Wildlife Board has proposed expanding the Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary to 16,550 square kilometers.
- The Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary is proposed to expand to 9,695 square kilometers.
- The original notifications in 1987 recorded nearly 5,000 square kilometers for Karakoram and 4,000 square kilometers for Changthang.
- The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) identified high conservation value areas in both sanctuaries.
- Some inhabited areas will be excluded, including 1,742 square kilometers in Karakoram and 164 square kilometers in Changthang.
- The revisions aim to allow local residents to develop small-scale tourism infrastructure and improve essential services.
