Expansion of Sanctuaries in Ladakh

The Ladakh State Wildlife Board has proposed expanding the Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary to 16,550 square kilometers.
The Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary is proposed to expand to 9,695 square kilometers.
The original notifications in 1987 recorded nearly 5,000 square kilometers for Karakoram and 4,000 square kilometers for Changthang.
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) identified high conservation value areas in both sanctuaries.
Some inhabited areas will be excluded, including 1,742 square kilometers in Karakoram and 164 square kilometers in Changthang.
The revisions aim to allow local residents to develop small-scale tourism infrastructure and improve essential services.
