India will establish the National Coral Reef Research Institute (NCRRI) in Chidiyatapu, South Andaman.
The project cost is estimated at ₹120 crore under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
NCRRI will act as the national hub for coral reef research, monitoring, and conservation.
The centre will focus on marine biodiversity assessments, reef restoration, and climate impact studies.
Coral reefs reduce storm impact, acting as natural coastal barriers, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of India’s four biodiversity hotspots.
