Guidance on methyl parathion insecticide

The Chemical Review Committee (CRC-22) of the Rotterdam Convention adopted a Decision Guidance Document on the insecticide methyl parathion at its meeting in Rome, Italy.
Methyl parathion is an organophosphorus insecticide used to control insects in crops such as cereals, fruits, vegetables and cotton.
It is highly toxic to humans, birds, honeybees and aquatic animals.
Brazil and the European Union (EU) have already banned the production, sale and use of products containing methyl parathion.
The guidance document has been forwarded to the Conference of the Parties (COP) for final review; if approved, methyl parathion will come under the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure for international trade.
