  • India aims to achieve 100 GWe (Gigawatt electric) nuclear capacity by 2047 under the Nuclear Energy Mission.
  • The government plans to develop at least five indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033, supported by 20,000 crore.
  • The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is developing indigenous reactors, including the 220 MWe (Megawatt electric) Bharat SMR and 55 MWe SMR-55.
  • The SHANTI Act (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Act) provides the legal framework for private participation and up to 49% foreign direct investment.
  • BARC is transferring SMR technology to Indian industries to support domestic manufacturing.
