India’s solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity has reached 100 GW, but it remains highly dependent on imports for key upstream inputs.
India’s module capacity rose from 2.3 GW in 2014 to 100 GW by August 2025, while cell capacity reached 25 GW and wafer capacity about 2 GW by March 2025.
India’s import dependence remains close to 100% for polysilicon, over 90% for wafers, over 60% for cells and over 40% for modules, with China as the major source.
The government is supporting domestic manufacturing through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) and Basic Customs Duty (BCD); the PLI scheme has awarded 48 GW of integrated PV manufacturing capacity.
India had 106 GW of installed solar capacity by March 2025 and needs to add around 174 GW to achieve its 280 GW solar target by 2030.
India’s solar PV exports rose eightfold to $1.2 billion in FY2025, but 97% went to the United States, showing the need to diversify export markets.
