- It was first celebrated in 2004.
- The day was established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
- The aim is to raise awareness about the importance and adoption of renewable energy in India.
- August 20 is also observed as Sadbhavana Divas, or “Day of Harmony,” to mark the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.
