The day commemorates the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, India’s youngest PM.
It was first celebrated in 2004.
The day was established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The aim is to raise awareness about the importance and adoption of renewable energy in India.
August 20 is also observed as Sadbhavana Divas, or “Day of Harmony,” to mark the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.
