India’s aviation sector has become the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market.
The number of airports has increased from 74 in 2014 to 163 in 2025, and is planned to reach 350–400 by 2047.
The Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme has operated 3.23 lakh flights and carried more than 1.56 crore passengers.
Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)–UDAN, 649 routes and 93 aerodromes, including 2 water aerodromes and 15 heliports, have been made operational.
By 2040, passenger traffic is expected to reach 1.1 billion, and total employment from the aviation sector may rise to about 25 million.
