India’s Nuclear Energy Roadmap

India aims to achieve 100 GWe (Gigawatt electric) nuclear capacity by 2047 under the Nuclear Energy Mission.
The government plans to develop at least five indigenous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033, supported by ₹20,000 crore.
The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is developing indigenous reactors, including the 220 MWe (Megawatt electric) Bharat SMR and 55 MWe SMR-55.
The SHANTI Act (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Act) provides the legal framework for private participation and up to 49% foreign direct investment.
BARC is transferring SMR technology to Indian industries to support domestic manufacturing.
