- In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly declared the observation of this Day.
- It was first observed on 4 April, 2006.
- In June 2014, over 1,000 state and non-governmental representatives of the international community gathered in Maputo, Mozambique, and set, through the “Maputo+15 Declaration,” a target of a landmine-free world by 2025.
