- This year is the first ever observance of this International Day.
- The UN General Assembly, on 19 December 2019, designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.
- The Food and Nutrition Organization of the UN (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will collaborate in facilitating the observance of the Day.
