  • The Kerala Legislative Assembly has passed the Malayalam Language Bill, 2025, making Malayalam the sole official language of the State.
  • The Bill mandates the use of Malayalam in government administration, education, judiciary, public communication, commerce, and digital platforms.
  • All government schools must teach Malayalam as the first language up to Class 10.
  • Also, provisions exist for linguistic minority students to study their mother tongue.
  • Bills, ordinances, and court judgments will be introduced or translated into Malayalam, and official correspondence will primarily use the language.
  • Digital tools and software will support Malayalam in information technology and e-governance, and a Malayalam Language Development Directorate will oversee implementation.
  • The Bill has faced opposition from Karnataka over concerns for Kannada-speaking minorities, while Kerala maintains it protects minority rights under Articles 29 and 30 of the Constitution.
