The Kerala Legislative Assembly has passed the Malayalam Language Bill, 2025, making Malayalam the sole official language of the State.
The Bill mandates the use of Malayalam in government administration, education, judiciary, public communication, commerce, and digital platforms.
All government schools must teach Malayalam as the first language up to Class 10.
Also, provisions exist for linguistic minority students to study their mother tongue.
Bills, ordinances, and court judgments will be introduced or translated into Malayalam, and official correspondence will primarily use the language.
Digital tools and software will support Malayalam in information technology and e-governance, and a Malayalam Language Development Directorate will oversee implementation.
The Bill has faced opposition from Karnataka over concerns for Kannada-speaking minorities, while Kerala maintains it protects minority rights under Articles 29 and 30 of the Constitution.
