The Malvi camel (White Camel) has been classified as endangered after its population declined to 102 animals, according to the 2019 Livestock Census.
The Malvi camel is the smallest camel breed in India and is one of the nine recognised camel breeds in the country.
It is mainly found in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh and parts of Rajasthan, and is valued for its milk production and load-carrying ability.
The National Research Centre on Camel (NRCC) has started a scientific breeding programme to conserve the breed by maintaining its pure genetic identity.
The conservation programme is being implemented under the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Karnal, Haryana, with the participation of livestock owners.
Malvi, Mewari, and Mewati camel breeds are considered endangered because they have fewer than 300 breeding females.
