- On January 30, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated.
- During Mahatma Gandhi's evening prayer at Birla Bhavan, Delhi, he was shot thrice by Nathuram Vinayak Godse.
- In November 1949, Godse was sentenced to death.
- Gandhi's birth anniversary – October 2 – is celebrated as the International Day of Non-violence.
