The Madras High Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to respond to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) about supplying sanitary pads through ration shops.
The PIL was about providing free or subsidised sanitary pads through the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The petition said many women use unhygienic materials during their periods due to economic problems, a condition called period poverty.
It requested that at least 25 disposable sanitary pads per month be provided to every family through fair price shops.
The use of dirty cloth materials, papers, tissues, rags and leaves as a menstruation supply is known as ‘period poverty’.
