  • The Madras High Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to respond to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) about supplying sanitary pads through ration shops.
  • The PIL was about providing free or subsidised sanitary pads through the Public Distribution System (PDS).
  • The petition said many women use unhygienic materials during their periods due to economic problems, a condition called period poverty.
  • It requested that at least 25 disposable sanitary pads per month be provided to every family through fair price shops.
  • The use of dirty cloth materials, papers, tissues, rags and leaves as a menstruation supply is known as ‘period poverty’.
