The National Statistical Office (NSO) released its 80th Round report on Domestic Tourism in India, based on a survey conducted from July 2025 to June 2026.
Pilgrimage and religious travel formed the largest share of overnight trips at about 48%, followed by health and medical travel at about 30%.
Health and medical travel were the most expensive category of domestic travel, while shopping was the second-highest expenditure category.
Rural households made more than twice as many overnight medical trips per 100 households as urban households.
Hired vehicles were the most common mode of transport for medical trips in both rural and urban areas.
Senior citizens aged 60 years and above accounted for 32.3% of overnight health and medical trips.
The report provides data on domestic overnight travel, travel purposes, expenditure, transport modes and rural–urban travel patterns.
