Organ Donations in Tamil Nadu

  • Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever monthly deceased organ donations with 33 donors in January 2026.
  • Government Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital recorded the highest number of donors (5) and functions as a Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre (NTORC).
  • Government Rajaji Hospital of Madurai recorded 4 donors, while Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Chennai recorded 2 donors each.
  • Other hospitals in Coimbatore, Salem, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital recorded one donor each.
  • In 2025, Tamil Nadu recorded 266 brain-dead organ donors, and 42 donations were recorded in the first 43 days of 2026.
  • The deceased donor organ transplantation programme is coordinated by the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu, and Government Order (GO) 331 issued in 2023 honours brain-dead donors with State respect.
