Petra and Ellora Caves Twinning Agreement

  • India and Jordan signed a twinning agreement between UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Petra and Ellora Caves.
  • Ellora Caves are located in the Charanandri Hills of Maharashtra near the Elaganga River.
  • Ellora Caves were carved between 600 and 1000 Common Era (CE) by the Rashtrakuta and Yadava dynasties.
  • It includes Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain monuments with mural paintings.
  • Petra is also called the Rose City because it is carved in pink sandstone cliffs.
  • Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom from around the 4th century Before Common Era (BCE).
  • Petra is partly built and partly carved into rock and is surrounded by mountains, narrow passages, and gorges.
