- Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is observed every year on 9 January by the Government of India.
- It marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915.
- The day honours the Indian diaspora living in more than 200 countries.
- India has the world’s largest diaspora, with about 35 million overseas Indians.
- The Indian diaspora sends more than USD 120 billion to India every year as remittances.
- The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is given on this day to recognise outstanding overseas Indians.
