Puri’s Drinkable Tap Water

  • Puri in Odisha officially became India's first city where tap water is safe to drink directly, without boiling or filtering.
  • Puri’s achievement complies with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) the highest certifying body on food and water certification under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
  • The mission is a part of the Centre’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2015 mission for safe water access.
  • In 2017, Odisha became the first and only state in India to roll out a pioneering ‘Drink from Tap’ initiative.
  • By the end of 2025 Puri, with a population 3 lakhs, was already the first city to provide drinkable tap water that too 24x7.
  • In 1908, Jersey City of USA became the first city in the world to continuously disinfect its water supply.
