Puri in Odisha officially became India's first city where tap water is safe to drink directly, without boiling or filtering.
Puri’s achievement complies with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) the highest certifying body on food and water certification under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
The mission is a part of the Centre’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2015 mission for safe water access.
In 2017, Odisha became the first and only state in India to roll out a pioneering ‘Drink from Tap’ initiative.
By the end of 2025 Puri, with a population 3 lakhs, was already the first city to provide drinkable tap water that too 24x7.
In 1908, Jersey City of USA became the first city in the world to continuously disinfect its water supply.
