Specter of extinction of species in Russia

  • Six mammal, bird and fish species are facing the spectre of extinction in Russia according to World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
  • These include the Saiga antelope, the gyrfalcon, the Persian leopard, the spoon-billed sandpiper, the Sakhalin sturgeon and the kaluga, also a type of sturgeon.
  • Meanwhile, the populations of some other species that were on the verge of extinction in the last century has increased due to conservation efforts.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
  • It is an international non-governmental organization which was founded in 1961.
  • It is the world’s largest conservation organization.
  • It’s Headquarter is located in Gland (Switzerland).
  • It releases the Living Planet Report every two years since 1998.
