- The Government of India is likely to withdraw the SPG (Special Protection Group) from former PM Manmohan Singh’s security.
- But however, he will continue to have the “highest category” Z-plus protection, to be provided by CRPF.
- SPG would be tasked with protecting only PM Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

- SPG is an armed force of the Union for providing proximate security to – PM, Former PM, members of their immediate families.
- It was formed in 1985 after Indira Gandhi assassination.
- Later on, it became a statutory body under Special Protection Group Act, 1988.
- Initially SPG provided security to PM only.
- Post Rajiv Gandhi assassination, SPG Act was amended in 1991 to provide security to former PMs and their immediate families.
