Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that a statue of former Premier (CM) of Madras presidency, Omandur Ramasamy Reddiyar would be installed on the campus of the Government Medical College, Omandurar Government Estate, Chennai.
He served as the Premier of Madras Presidency from 23 March 1947 to 6 April 1949.
Ramaswamy Reddiyar was a devotee of Vallalar.
During his tenure, the Madras Temple Entry Authorization Act of 1947 was passed.
This act was intended to give Dalits and other prohibited Hindus full and complete rights to enter Hindu temples.
The Devadasi Dedication Abolition Act of 1947 put an end to the devadasi system.
It was during his tenure that India achieved independence from the United Kingdom.
In 1948, he ordered the purchase of a de Havilland Dove, the first aeroplane to be owned by the Government of Madras.
He introduced for the first time in the country; a 14.29% quota was provided to Backward Classes in public services.
A 29% reservation was also provided for Scheduled Castes and Tribes during his tenure.
He also oversaw the Zamindari Abolition Act, 1947, aimed at empowering farmers.
