The Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38.
The Bill raises the number of judges to 37 judges excluding the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
The Bill was introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on 20 July 2026 and replaces the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026.
The increase aims to improve judicial capacity and address the growing number of pending cases in the Supreme Court.
Parliament has the power to change the number of Supreme Court judges through legislation.
