- Vahan is a digital national vehicle registry portal.
- It captures 28 types of vehicle data including colour, power, dealer, chassis number and fuel type.
- The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has introduced new norms to prevent misuse of this data.
- It has mandated that the data can only be used by companies
- that are registered in India and
- only if they at least 50 per cent Indian owned.
- All such data accessed by companies will have to be stored in servers in India.
- Companies using such data for commercial purpose will have to pay out an annual fee of ₹3 crore.
