World Duchenne Awareness Day 2026 – September 07

September 11 , 2026 15 hrs 0 min 12 0
  • The day raises awareness about Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare progressive genetic disorder and one of the most common paediatric genetic rare diseases.
  • DMD is caused by mutations in the DMD gene on the X chromosome, leading to a deficiency of the dystrophin protein that protects muscles.
  • It mainly affects males and causes progressive muscle weakness, eventually affecting movement, breathing and heart function.
  • The disease is named after Dr Duchenne de Boulogne, who described it in detail in the 1860s.
  • The theme for the year 2026 is “Family: the heart of care”.
