World Duchenne Awareness Day 2026 – September 07

The day raises awareness about Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare progressive genetic disorder and one of the most common paediatric genetic rare diseases.
DMD is caused by mutations in the DMD gene on the X chromosome, leading to a deficiency of the dystrophin protein that protects muscles.
It mainly affects males and causes progressive muscle weakness, eventually affecting movement, breathing and heart function.
The disease is named after Dr Duchenne de Boulogne, who described it in detail in the 1860s.
The theme for the year 2026 is “Family: the heart of care”.
