World Elephant Day 2026 - August 12

The day aims to promote elephant conservation and protection of their habitats and corridors.
India is home to nearly 60% of the world’s wild Asian elephants, with an estimated 22,446 elephants under the 2021–25 census.
They are protected through 33 Elephant Reserves and 150 identified corridors across India.
Project Elephant, launched in 1992, supports habitat protection, scientific monitoring and measures to reduce human-elephant conflict.
India’s first DNA-based synchronised elephant census used dung samples to identify individual elephants genetically.
The theme for 2026 is “Bringing the world together to help elephants”.
