The day is marked to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands for people and nature.
Wetlands include marshes, lakes, rivers, mangroves, lagoons, and human-made wetlands like rice fields.
On this day in 1971, the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) adopted in Ramsar city, Iran.
The theme for 2026 is “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.”
