- Zimbabwe has announced plans to cull at least 50 elephants in the Save Valley Conservancy.
- The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) currently holds around 2,550 elephants.
- This count is far exceeding its ecological carrying capacity of 800.
- The meat from the cull will be distributed to local communities.
- Zimbabwe is home to one of the world’s largest elephant populations — second only to Botswana.
- This is the second time in recent years that Zimbabwe has resorted to culling elephants.
